{"id":2523,"date":"2025-04-12T01:01:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-12T01:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oriccabattery.co.uk\/Blog\/?p=2523"},"modified":"2025-04-12T01:01:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-12T01:01:00","slug":"windows-11s-controversial-recall-feature-could-soon-arrive-for-copilot-pcs-i-just-hope-microsofts-tightening-of-its-privacy-is-up-to-scratch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oriccabattery.co.uk\/Blog\/archives\/2523","title":{"rendered":"Windows 11\u2019s controversial Recall feature could soon arrive for Copilot+ PCs \u2013 I just hope Microsoft\u2019s tightening of its privacy is up to scratch"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n\nThere\u2019ll be no shortage of security experts and hackers lining up to test Recall\u2019s defenses, let\u2019s face it<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/24UwJgyxKCGvKtzZH5ckmN.jpg\" alt=\"A woman sitting in a chair looking at a Windows 11 laptop\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Image credit: Microsoft)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Recall has entered the final stage of testing in Windows 11 previews<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>This means it could soon be released for all Copilot+ PCs<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>However, the rollout will likely be a gradual one (as is the case in Release Preview testing right now)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those wondering whereWindows 11\u2019s controversial Recall feature has got to \u2013last seen lost in testing somewhere\u2013 well, it looks like Microsoft is readying to release this AI-powered search functionality for real soon enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Vergehighlighted thatMicrosofthas pushed out a new test build (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windows-insider\/2025\/04\/10\/releasing-windows-11-build-26100-3902-to-the-release-preview-channel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">version 26100.3902<\/a>) in the Release Preview channel, and that this comes with both Recall and itspartner feature Click to Do(context-sensitive AI-driven suggestions).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are four main testing channels for Windows 11, and Release Preview is the last stage before hitting finished versions of the desktopoperating system\u2013 as the name denotes, it\u2019s the final stage before release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, it looks like Recall and Click to Do could soon arrive for everyone (who has aCopilot+ PC\u2013 remember, these AI features need thepowerful NPUthat\u2019s a requirement for those devices).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Recall does pitch up, it\u2019ll be optimized for only an initial small set of languages. Those are: English, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who\u2019ve forgotten \u2013 though that\u2019s unlikely, given all thecontroversy this capability has caused since its revelationlast year \u2013 Recall uses AI and regularly taken screenshots of the activity on your PC to drive an in-depth natural language search. (Queries such as: \u201cFind that document where I wrote my packing list for holidays abroad.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While that certainly promises to be very useful, there have been many privacy and security concerns around Recall, which has led Microsoft to take a bunch of steps to shore up those areas. That includes the introduction ofWindows Hello sign-into confirm it\u2019s actually you present at the Copilot+ PC when using Recall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&gt;&gt;&gt;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oriccabattery.co.uk\/microsoft-battery-G3HTA056H-p1786468.htm\">Replacement battery for Microsoft Surface Pro X 13&#8243; Tablet<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/jWccBrBo28bsiCUofxHehS-970-80.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Image credit: Microsoft)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"analysis-a-pivotal-moment-for-copilot-pcs-3\">Analysis: A pivotal moment for Copilot+ PCs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is exciting news for those who want to use Recall, of course, and interesting for those of us who don\u2019t feel drawn to the feature yet, but still want to see how it plays out in the real-world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is Microsoft\u2019s cornerstone AI feature for Copilot+ PCs, of course, so it\u2019s going to be watched keenly by a whole lot of eyes. And prodded and poked at by a whole lot of security experts and hackers (white hat or otherwise).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will Microsoft be nervous? Most likely, certainly about the reaction this is going to be met with, andhow bulletproof Recall actually is security-wise, when it launches on a grand scale \u2013 although we need to hold our horses a bit on that front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recall will still likely be labelled a preview ability, even when it releases to finished Windows 11 Copilot+ devices. There\u2019ll be a limited rollout to begin with, as well, when Recall formally debuts. Even right now in testing, Microsoft has said that the rollout is a gradual one, so not all testers will see this straight away. I\u2019m guessing the speed of the rollout in Release Preview will depend on how well this last phase of testing progresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&gt;&gt;&gt;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oriccabattery.co.uk\/msi-battery-S1S-0000330-D22-p1785832.htm\">Replacement battery for MSI Summit E13FlipEvo A11MT-205RU-WW71185U16GXXDX10P<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the footnotes for the blog post for this new preview build, Microsoft tells us that Recall will be available in \u201cearly 2025 in most markets\u201d which is a bit odd, seeing as that timeframe has already sailed in my book. (I\u2019d call Q1 the early part of the year, and of course we\u2019re in Q2 now, in April).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Microsoft also clarifies that Recall won\u2019t be coming to Europe early in 2025, and that it\u2019ll be \u201crolling out to the European Economic Area later this year\u201d instead.
