\n\tAt this week’s Mobile \nWorld Congress in Barcelona, Spain, it became clear that 2019 is going \nto be the year of the foldable phone.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tSeveral major phone makers showcased new flexible handpieces at the massive trade show that visits the city each year.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tHinges and special, bendable screens allow the devices to switch between smartphone and tablet.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tTwo telecommunications \nheavyweights \u2013 Huawei from China, and Samsung from South Korea \u2013 went \nhead-to-head at the event, which is also known as MWC, this year, \nshowing off their flexible offerings in pavilions directly across from \neach another.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tHuawei’s foldable phone\n \u2013 the Mate X \u2013 was unveiled a few days before the MWC kicked off, and \nthe phone has drawn a steady stream of visitors to the company’s \npavilion.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tThe Mate X is an \nimpressive feat of engineering. The hinge alone took three years to \ndevelop. The phone combines a foldable screen, artificial intelligence, \nand a new interface. It is also compatible with 5G networks.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tHuawei believes the \nMate X will be the phone to carry people into the 5G era. And it will be\n in direct competition with its flexible rival, the Galaxy Fold, by \nSamsung.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tThe Fold comes out this\n spring, though curiously no-one was allowed to get their hands on one \nat the MWC this week, where the device remained behind glass. \nConversely, journalists and industry players were allowed to make an \nappointment to check out the Mate X.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\t“They heard we were \nlaunching, so they hurried to launch,” Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei \nconsumer business group, told media at the tradeshow. “You can see this \nis a real phone. I’ve been using it for many days. The others? I don’t \nknow, because they are not ready.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tSeveral other companies\n showcased foldable devices at MWC. Chinese electronics manufacturer \nRoyole seemed to be having the most fun at the conference. The company \nslotted curved screens into top hats, T-shirts, and handbags, provoking a\n vision of the future where our accessories double as electronic \nbillboards.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tRoyole allowed visitors to handle its foldable phone, which has been on the market for several months.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\t“We launched the \nworld’s first commercial foldable smartphone last October,” said company\n co-founder Peng Wei. “This is the first commercially available foldable\n phone. We have already shipped orders.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\t“This flexible-screen \ntechnology enables innovation. Phones are no longer limited by a rigid \nscreen. It’s a combination of phone and a tablet, so you can combine the\n large screen experience with the portability.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tGuangzhou-based \nelectronics company TCL unveiled its DragonHinge technology at the MWC. \nThe multi-gear hinge features in five new foldable devices from TCL, \nsome of which will be available next year.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\t“We see the opportunity\n to really shape and bring something fresh to market,” Stefan Streit, \nTCL’s global marketing manager, said of the array of foldable devices \nthe company will offer. “There’s so many different ways you can do \nthem.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tSeveral other major \nphone makers have plans to make foldable phones, including LG, Xiaomi, \nand Lenovo. So far, iPhone manufacturer Apple has kept its cards close \nto its chest on the matter.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\tWhat is known is that \nthe company has filed patents related to foldable technology, which \nsuggests it is at least exploring the idea. In any case, if the \ntechnology is welcomed by consumers, Huawei and Samsung will have a \nsignificant headstart, and Apple will be in the uncommon position of \nplaying catch-up.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5G has been another dominant theme at this year’s MWC and almost all of the vendors were plugging some aspect of 5G innovation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
